Packing The Kitchen

Packing The Kitchen

If you are getting ready to move and you are doing the packing yourself, you are probably dreading packing up the kitchen.  After all, the kitchen is filled with small and fragile items that require taking a great deal of care when packing.  In addition, in order to make unpacking easier, you need to make certain to pack the kitchen items in a sensible manner and to label them appropriately.  Packing the kitchen is certainly one of the most dreaded rooms to pack.  Nonetheless, with these tips, you can make the task far easier.

Sort Through Your Belongings

In order to simplify the packing and unpacking process, you should sort through your kitchen items before you even start packing.  You may find that there are several items that you no longer need.  In this case, consider throwing the items away, donating them to charity, or even selling them in a garage sale.  In order to simplify the move, it may be worthwhile for you to get rid of some of the heavier items and replace them once you arrive at your new home.

You should also consider where you are moving to, as some of the items may not be useful in the new space.  If you are moving to a home with a smaller kitchen, for example, it makes sense to downsize your kitchen items before you make the move.  Similarly, if you are moving to a different country, your small appliances may not work because the country uses different plug shapes and voltages.  Getting rid of these items will make your move less expensive when hiring movers to transport your items.

Pack Food Wisely

Food items can be tricky when packing the kitchen.  In general, canned goods will cost you more to pack and transport than simply replacing them.  Lightweight items such as spices, pasta, and dried soups and sauces are generally light enough to make moving them worthwhile.  Ideally, you should try to plan your meals ahead of time so you use up as much of your food as possible before moving day.  This is particularly true of frozen foods and perishable foods, which cannot be transported long distances.  By using as much of the food as possible, you won’t have to worry about transporting them.  If you do have food to transport, it should be placed in a hard-shell container.  That way, the food won’t be damaged during the move.  For the food you cannot transport, consider donating it to a local shelter or food bank so it doesn’t go to waste.

Bringing Cleaning Supplies

Most homeowners store their cleaning supplies in the kitchen.  Any supplies that are open should be left behind.  If you don’t give these supplies away, make certain to dispose of them properly so they do not cause harm to the environment.  You might want to pack one unopened bottle of an all-purpose cleaner, however.  That way, you will have a cleaner available when you arrive to your new destination.  This cleaner should be packed in your essentials box.  The essentials box should be packed last and should contain all of those items you will need right away when moving in to your new home.  These include items such as a dishtowel, dish soap, a dining set for each member of the family, scissors or a craft knife for opening the other boxes, a flashlight, and other items you think you might need right away.
